In August 2025, Hong Kong's foreign exchange reserves fell to $421.6 billion, down from $425.4 billion in July. This downturn signaled the second month in a row of declining reserves. The reserves were substantial, amounting to more than five times the currency in circulation and approximately 37% of the Hong Kong dollar's M3 money supply. When accounting for unsettled foreign exchange contracts, the total foreign currency reserve assets stood at $421.1 billion in August, a decrease from July's $424.5 billion.
