2009.02.1806:13:00UTC+00Indian Govt. Likely To Levy 35% Safeguard Duty On Some Aluminium Products

Indian Government is likely to levy 35% safeguard duty on some aluminium products to protect the domestic industry from cheap imports from China, reported the PTI. Safeguard is a temporary measure to prevent any damage to the domestic industry from cheap imports. The Directorate General of Safeguards, Customs and Central Excise that initiated a probe into cheap arrival of aluminium products in India last month, recommended to the Committee of Secretaries or CoS for imposing ad-valorem provisional safeguard duty for 200 days. It also said that delay in application of specific safeguard measures might result in damaging the industry, which would be hard to repair.

The DGS proposed duty on flat-rolled aluminium products used by sectors like auto and construction, and aluminium foil, widely consumed by the packaging industry. The proposed safeguard duty on flat-rolled items is 21% and on foil it is 35%. Aluminium producers led by Hindalco had last month filed a petition with the DGS for imposing safeguard duty against China.
